I prefer teaching people how to make perfume in an alcohol base. Perfumers alcohol really shows the materials off to their best advantage and gives even a beginner a great shot at making a decent perfume quite quickly.
However, due to its flammable nature its difficult to ship and along with various licensing requirements many people just can’t get hold of the proper grade.
No matter what DIY perfume recipes on Pinterest and Youtube tell you – vodka is not a siuitable professional medium for making perfume!
The next best thing on both counts is to make an oil base scent. You can make it at either 10% or 15% fragrance for a perfume strength (dab on pulse points) OR a 1-2% strength for a moisturising scented body oil.
You Will Need:
- A clean glass beaker or shot glass
- Jojoba or fractionated coconut oil for the base
- A selection of essential oils and absolutes of your choice
Add your aromatic materials starting with the base notes and working up to the top notes. As you add each material swirl it in the oil so it blends, smelling as you go.
Record your formula as you you go along so that you do not forget anything. Always date and label your creations and store in small glass bottles.
Quantities:
10% fragrance will be 20 drops essential oil or absolute consisting of:
8 drops base notes
6 drops middle notes
6 drops top notes
